According to a survey by Dell Technologies, some 84% of Malaysians said that they're ready to work remotely for the long term but they're facing challenges in doing so. In the new study which surveyed over 7,000 working professionals in Asia, Dell found some areas of concerns raised by Malaysians.
In its Remote Work Readiness index which captured data on employees’ gauge in readiness for long-term remote work, Dell discovered that 8 out 10 of the 1,030 Malaysians surveyed experienced ongoing productivity challenges.
Note: All of those surveyed were working professionals aged 18 and above.
Challenges of working remotely.
These challenges unfortunately impact their perceptions of the factors that are important for success at work.
For example, 47% believe in-person communication is crucial, especially for those working remotely for the long term. Since interactions with their employers is at a minimum, those surveyed highlighted their concerns over their job security. Another area of concern is internet bandwidth, which plays a huge a factor at work (elaborated further down below).
Are employers supportive?
While 43% of employees agree that their employees are doing their very best to support their remote working process, 50% revealed that their companies aren't helping them fully with technological resources.
With the new norm, 38% said they experienced challenges concerning lack of best practices. Among the areas they felt that their companies could improve include: mental well-being sessions, learning and development lessons and training for virtual tools.
Unfortunately, 37% revealed that there's a lack of team engagement initiatives, let alone proper access to digital tools to review performances as well as annual leave.
Technological woes
Circling back to the internet bandwidth issues, 44% are concerned that lack of infrastructure support hinders their productivity. 33% say that there aren't able to properly access internal company resources. On the other hand, about 29% say that they aren't provided with the necessary tools to work remotely and this in turn, unfortunately, poses a great challenge in terms of their productivity.
Work redefined
According to KT Ong, Dell's country manager for Malaysia, the definition of work today has evolved.
"It is no longer anchored to a place or time, but instead is focused on outcomes," he said in a statement accompanying the report.
“Employers with the long-term health of the business in mind must be ready to help employees – the backbone of any company – realize both their professional and personal roles effectively regardless of where they will be working. This is work redefined.”
