Am I an Alpha Female?

Updated: Jul 13, 2020

The term alpha female has been going around for a while. It is generally used to describe strong and independent women. Some people perceive alpha females to be bossy and aggressive, but those are actually people trying hard to be leaders.

Traditionally, alpha; originated from the studies of animal behaviour. Let's take a pack of wolves as an example - the alpha leads the hunt in search for their prey. Although the term was generally used to describe male animals leading the pack, the term grew more fluid over the course of time. Here are some questions to determine whether you or someone you know is an alpha female or otherwise.

Question 1: How do I lead?

Becoming a leader is never easy. The leader of a household holds the responsibility of managing the household and finances. The leader in a circle of friends takes charge in settling arguments or petty bickering. The leader of a college group assignment has to ensure tasks are delegated accordingly and are being worked on.

If someone leads her team confidently, then she is an alpha female. Alpha females are not reluctant and readily accept roles of leadership. Not because they are brazen or foolhardy, but rather because they know what skills they can offer and they can lead the team.

Question 2: How is my EQ like?

High EQ (emotional intelligence) marks an alpha female. People with high EQ are not only good at gauging emotions (for themselves and others), they are also aware of the impact and consequences of certain emotions.

Due to their super-connection with emotions, people with high EQ make great business negotiators and smooth over arguments at work. On a social context, they're the mood makers of the group. They are the conversation starters and the ones cracking jokes.

Question 3: Do I genuinely like to learn?

Alpha females love to learn. Whether they learn from the hardships they've faced or

by observing others, they take pride in lifetime learning. For alpha females, learning from mistakes is their greatest teacher. Learning from past mistakes enables them to sharpen their skills, talents and perspective of the world.

Question 4: How do I define a strong person?

Someone's strength can be determined by her physical and mental states. She may be a good friend to ask for advice on life problems, but she may not be able to move furniture in the house for gatherings.

Some alpha females take this term interchangeably. They'd try to balance out some time to go to the gym and workout and also take time to sharpen their thoughts and perceptions. Being mentally strong doesn't always mean being sharp-tongued or witty. It could also mean being empathetic and kind when necessary.

Question 5: How ambitious am I?

Ambition gives people an opportunity to strive for goals they hope to achieve. If someone desires to be a football player, training can begin throughout their years in school. If they desire to be an actress, they can begin by going to acting classes and giving a go at auditions. Most people feel their skills are limited to the opportunities they can get. For alpha females, there is no limit to achieving their goals.

Alpha females would readily look for teachers or mentors, find something to challenge their dreams and search for opportunities. They strive to achieve some of their dreams on their own and reach out for support from friends and family to meet certain goals in life. Their ambitions are not bound by anything but themselves. Alpha females do not need to be empowered, they're empowered as it is.
