Walking into the new year, we can look forward to new beauty trends and tips. If you're bored of the same makeup routine for years (we sure have had enough of contours and thick foundations!), then 2020 is the perfect time for you to try out new and upcoming trends. Eager to know the products of choice to replace your outdated one and what techniques to use? Fret not! The MWAW team have got you covered! Here are some makeup trends for 2020 according to beauty gurus and influencers. (Time to shine!)
1. ‘No Make-up’ Make-up Look
Yes, you read that right. The first make-up trend for 2020 is all about that minimalistic, I-woke-up-like-this look. Gone are the days of contouring and tonnes of foundation that we have been introduced to within these past few years. “I see a more natural, less dramatic look coming in for 2020 and Spring,” said American celebrity makeup artist, Christina Flach. Flach added that some of the looks we have been used to seeing since the 2010s are on their way out — particularly exaggerated contouring.
On the other hand, Harper's Bazaar reported that the ‘no make-up’ make-up look is the go-to look for most of the spring and summer 2020 runway trends, thus confirming that this will be the next go-to look for celebrities and influencers alike from now on. For a quick tip, be sure to use a touch of concealer and dab on some highlighter for a natural and fresh look.
2. Natural Brows
2020 is all about natural looks and that includes eyebrow trends for the year — leaving bold, overly defined and structured eyebrow makeup trends behind. “I've had lots of clients going for more of the 'undone' look than the full-on structured brows look, which shows us that the all-natural look is making its mark,” said Diana Melendez, certified microblading expert and owner of the threading and microblading studio, Accentuated, in Scottsdale, Arizona.
According to Melendez, full-on bushy brows are set to be a major trend for 2020. If you’re a girl with natural, bushy eyebrows, then now is your time to shine! If you are worried of your brows looking somewhat unkempt, fear not as it does not take much for you to whip them into shape. “Only pluck away from brow lines to clean up a bit and leave the rest to an eyebrow specialist like myself,” advised Melendez. On the other hand, if you want to embrace the trend but your brows are not up for the challenge, try an eyebrow serum or better yet, apply some castor oil — which is a natural hair growth stimulant — every night before going to sleep.
3. Glowy Skin
To own the ‘no-makeup’ makeup trend that is all the rage this year, it is necessary to ensure that your skin stays healthy naturally. "The healthier the skin is from the inside, the more it will reward you on the outside,” said celebrity makeup artist Christina Flach, who personally swears by green juice and celery juice.
Meanwhile, celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder agrees that a majority of veggie-based juices are great for the skin and body. “Celery is 95 per cent water,” explained Snyder, who added that when it comes to skin, hydration is key. According to Snyder, the natural sodium in celery increases stomach acid which is beneficial for the gut and is also useful for both lowering stress and brightening the skin. Keep in mind that a good exterior skincare routine is just as important as taking care of your skin internally.
4. White Eyeliners
Experts predicted that bright, white eyeliners will be all the rage this year. According to Christopher Macken — makeup artist and global creative director of Ready to Wear —white eyeliners can be used to brighten up the eyes, making them pop. So, instead of limiting it only to the waterline, try white eyeliners on your upper lines for a more festive look. Macken assures that the trend is bound to be a “show-stopping” look while being versatile. “White eyeliner not only makes your eyes look larger but also makes you look more awake,” exclaimed makeup artist, Geo Brian Hennings.
5. Glossy Look
Kenny Screven — makeup artist and beauty influencer — predicts that “glossy looks” are definitely in for 2020. “You see celebrities like the Kardashians and Beyoncé rocking the gloss look all over — from glossy lips, glossy eyelids to dewy skin,” said Screven. However, glossy doesn't necessarily have to mean sticky. According to Byrdie — a shoppable online and mobile content platform focused on anything related to beauty — a glossy lid look can be accomplished in just two steps.
First, apply a fine shimmer eyeshadow on your eyelids. Next, apply a light balm all over it. Keep in mind to avoid putting it along the crease of your eyelids. Meanwhile, face gloss is great for an all-over application as long as you do not mind the sticky factor. When wearing this look, experts say it's best to keep your hair pulled back and let your face take the centre stage.
