Take A Break, Have A Hobby

Updated: Sep 23, 2020

What's the earliest memory that comes to mind when you come across the word 'hobby'? May it be collecting a variety postcards or stamps to doodling to sports, it varies per individual. It's still a topic of conversation during casual or formal settings. What's the big deal about having a hobby anyway? Here are some of the answers to that mind boggling question.

Hobbies help to stimulate creativity

Most hobbies like painting, doodling, or writing in journals encourage people to be more creative. It could be the thought of mixing limited paint colours to make a new colour or coming up with the perfect line to describe an event. These artistic-based activities can sometimes help a person to channel creative thinking at the workplace.

Hobbies help to balance work and life

When people have hobbies, it’s only natural that they’d want to make time to do them. One good thing about having a hobby as a working adult is that it can create a work-life balance. Someone would have to plan her schedule properly to balance both work and deadlines so that her hobby can be carried out.

Not only does this make the person a better planner, her management of time would also be improved.

Hobbies help to build confidence

Building confidence is not an easy feat but with the right hobbies, it may not be that hard as you think. People can feel more confident when they have a sense of achievement in doing something they’re good at. When people accomplish things, they’d feel like they can take on the world, let alone work!

Hobbies can promote eustress

Eustress is a positive type of stress that allows people to feel excited about life and what they do in general. Having the right hobbies allows people to channel more of this. Why? It's simple - they're enjoying themselves doing something they love.

Hobbies can reduce negative stress

The need to de-stress is crucial once people enter the working world. Deadlines must be met and the workload never ends. Employees would need to deal with their bosses and colleagues and the office sometimes feels like a prison to earn money. They can take away all these accumulated negative stress by engaging in their hobbies after working hours.

Hobbies can challenge you

Hobbies don’t necessarily need to be something people are familiar with. Some people try out new things, like rock-climbing or diving to break out of their nine-to-five routine and challenge themselves. New activities like these can help them see the world in a new perspective.

Hobbies make you socialize

Not all hobbies are solitary. Some hobbies need to be carried out in groups, like yoga classes or reading clubs and would usually require regular meetings. Meeting new people does not only promote socializing, it expands social groups too.

Hobbies make you physically healthier

Some hobbies will make you move and sweat a lot. Studies among working adults have shown that sporty hobbies improved their physical health and kept them fit. What’s great about sporty hobbies is that there are a lot of options for people to choose from! People could go for popular sports like football, badminton and basketball or even solitary types like hiking or cycling depending on the one they prefer.
