She added on to say that the campaign is of national importance as both public and private sectors came together to showcase their support for the frontliners.
Under this initiative, MHTC will work together with selected public and private hospitals to document the journeys of frontliners working across various sectors including diagnostics, operations and patient care. Ruth Bader Ginsburg Will Be The First Woman Ever To Lie at U.S. Capitol
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who passed away on September 18th will be the first woman to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol, allowing mourners to come pay tribute to the trailblazing litigator.
After civil rights legend, Rosa Parks had passed away in 2005, she lay in honor at the Capitol - a distinction given to private citizens as opposed to government officials like Ruth.
House speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on September 21st that the ceremony for Ruth will be held on September 25th and it will be by invitation only to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
In US history, only 33 people, all men, have lain in state at the Capitol. Most of them are either presidents, congressmen or military leaders. Only four civilians have laid in honor at the Capitol, including two U.S. Capitol police officers, evangelist Rev. Billy Graham and Rosa Parks.
There are no rules or laws that determine who will lie in state. According to the architect of the Capitol - the distinction is determined by the House and the Senate.
May you rest in eternal peace, Notorious R.B.G.
Sneak peek from MWAW Issue 2: Mother On A Mission
According to the International Dyslexia Association (2017), 5-10 percent of the global population have dyslexia. In a report published in Malaysia, this figure is also consistent in our school age children. Dyslexia isn't a form of disease or an intellectual defect, it is a language-based disability. The MWAW team had the pleasure of speaking to Dr. Choy Su-Ling, a mother of three children with learning difficulties and founder of Altuz Academy to understand how dyslexia affects children.
Founding the academy
When Dr Choy's eldest son was seven years old, he was diagnosed as being dyslexic. She signed him up for numerous therapies to improve his condition. Dr. Choy who herself has a background in communications and language decided to take up a course to help her son. There, she was introduced to the Orton-Gillingham approach.
The Orton-Gillingham approach has been around since the 1920s. There are over 70,000 peer reviewed research papers on this approach and it has been proven effective across the board. After slightly over a year of teaching her son with this approach, he was able to read at the same level as his classmates and his self-confidence also improved. Seeing how successful this approach was, she decided to help other children and hence the idea for Altuz Academy took shape.
Altuz Academy
For founder Dr Choy, Altuz Academy is more than just a learning centre. With altuz meaning 'high' or 'elevated' in Latin, the academy aims to assist individuals, particularly children achieve greater heights in literacy skills. The academy offers one-to-one and small group interventions, standardized screening and literacy assessments.
As A Mother With A Dyslexic Child
Dr. Choy mentioned that she was enveloped by grief when she first came to know that her son was diagnosed with dyslexia. She was worried for his future and challenges he had to face compared to other children. As a parent, she felt that grieving was a necessary process because only then one can find acceptance and take action. She faced a couple of challenges - her family and friends did not know what dyslexia was all about and she faced difficulties when it came to filtering sites and information on dyslexia that were legitimate online.
