Malaysian Surgeon, Dr. April, Only Woman To Be Honoured With Prestigious American College Of Surgeons Fellowship
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) is the largest organisation of surgeons in the world with over 82,000 members from all over the world. Becoming a part of the organisation or a "Fellow" as they call it is no easy feat because of the high standards held by ACS in their membership vetting process.
Only nine fellowships were awarded to prominent surgeons this year and one of them was Professor Dr. April Camilla Roslani from University of Malaya. Dr. April who is a colorectal surgeon and medical oncologist was the only female surgeon to be presented with the Honorary Fellowship in ACS on Monday via a virtual convocation ceremony.
Dr. April said that it was a great honour to be given the award and that she had not expected it. As it is not something you can apply for as nominations are made by existing fellows, she didn't know that she was even considered for it.
"It’s a very old and established award that is based entirely on merit. There is no obligation for the college to give out any awards each year," she said.
ACS only awards Fellowships to surgeons whose education, training, personal qualifications, surgical competence and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation and are found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the college.
Dr. April has been a surgeon for over 15 years. She has grown to become an expert in her field which revolves around colorectal diseases and surgery.
Congratulations Dr. April on your outstanding achievement!
Sneak peak from MWAW Issue 2: Rita Sosilawati - The Lady with Many Hats
Erni Dekritawati Yuliana or better known as Rita Sosilawati isn’t any ordinary woman. She is a woman of strength and the aura she radiates to those around her is truly one-of-a kind. Let us delve deeper into the life of this lady with many hats.
The Rise Of Victoria Sloane
She is an entrepreneur who has taken on the continuation of her late mother’s legacy, Nouvelle Beauty Centre Sdn Bhd. After continuing her mother’s legacy for about 10 years, she jumped onto the bandwagon in establishing her own handbags business, Victoria Sloane. Victoria Sloane is actually her alter ego name when she was pursuing her studies in the UK.
The Person Behind The Intricate Design Of Handbags
The designs for the gorgeous handbags are done by Rita herself. With an educational background in the field of arts and design, she is adept in design for her Victoria Sloane handbag line. Her handbags are sold online via Shopee under ritasosilawati.os as she does not have an outlet for it yet. She has received requests from many to open a shop in shopping malls but it is on hold for now as she would like to dive in deeper into the online market as it’s booming.
Challenges Faced As A Businesswoman
Just like any other entrepreneur or businesswoman, Rita too faced her share of challenges. After her mother’s demise in 2010, she had to be rid of all assumptions from the community that she was too young for the position to take over her mother’s legacy. Rita and her siblings had to use their own pocket money to pay their salaries. They had no collateral back then.
