There is a longstanding myth that surrounds long distance relationships. It is said that they are less likely to last compared to the usual ones. However, there has never been any concrete evidence to prove that this is true. It's merely a belief that people have because they prefer relationships where they can meet regularly with their partner.
The idea of romantic relationships have always centered around going on dates and seeing each other as often as possible. But when circumstances compel people to stay apart - either a job transfer to a far-off city or a pandemic that forces people to stay home - how can career women maintain their relationships? Here are some of the suggested ways to keep up with a long distance relationship.
Communicate with your partner
Life is difficult. Sometimes people will have problems they encounter professionally and socially that they tend to keep to themselves. They would prefer to bottle all these up and not tell their romantic partners because they don't want to impose and trouble them. This is wrong. The point of being in a romantic relationship is to have someone to talk to during good and bad times. Talk your feelings out to your partner - talk about how your day went at work or something that may have upset you. Remember, nobody is a mind reader.
Set some time to talk - no texting only
The current working generation may prefer to text, but talking is important. Talking has more non-verbal cues that can be lost in written messages, like tone of voice and condition of voice (sore, strained, healthy and whatnot). To take it a step further, talking through video calls lets the partner know about facial expressions or body language. Talking is healthier for relationships. Unless people have things they want to hide from their partner, they shouldn't be averse to talking to him after a
long day or before bed.
Plan virtual dates
Just because couples cannot meet up regularly, it doesn't mean that they cannot have dates. Set up virtual dates over video-calling apps like Skype. Couples could prepare their own fancy dinners on each of their own ends, dress for it, flirt and make small talk with fake candle light - just like an actual dinner date. While these notions don't have to be regular - as some people may not have the finances to do these often! - the thought of having virtual dates lets him know that he is being
appreciated.
Keep the love alive
How do people keep their relationships alive? Answer: by treating the relationship as something new every time. Couples could make up fun surprises for each other to keep the romance alive. They could deliver roses to the partner's doorstep, or even better, send their partner's favourite food like desserts or even a whole meal during times when they are apart. Heck, they could even send their partner a box of Milo packets, if that is what their partner is craving for but couldn't purchase in their area! These surprises could be sent to work or - at times like these - straight to their homes. These notions don't have to be grand, like sending 999 flowers tied up in a box, but the idea shows that they are not taking their partner for granted.
Trust your partner and the relationship
As with any relationship, the problem lies in trusting and having faith in each other. Long distance relationships just bring more doubt because partners don't see who their partners meet up or interact with. But, just as the chances people take when they begin a relationship with someone, trusting in their partner is crucial. Believe that your partner cares about you just as much as you do and refrain from doing careless actions like picking a fight with them or looking for someone else out of baseless doubts.
In short, romantic relationships need both partners to cooperate. If the couple does whatever it takes to maintain their relationship, long distance or not, things could end up great for them. Remember, it takes two to tango after all.
