Why Does Company Culture Matter?

Company culture goes beyond climbing corporate ladders for prestige. It usually helps to define an organization and the values it upholds. A company’s culture does not only shape their identity, it also defines the way they operate. Why does it matter, you ask? Here are some reasons why.

Increases employee engagement

Take a moment to think about it. If employees feel like they belong in a culture, wouldn’t they be more proactive? Employees who strongly believe in the company’s ideals will definitely be more pumped up and willing to contribute as much as they can.

Lessens the turnover rate

When an organization has a healthy corporate culture implemented, employees are less likely to quit their jobs. If your company culture is diverse and inclusive, no employees would feel excluded and will want to stay on at the company.

Boosts recruitment for future employees

If job-seekers were to consider between two equally prestigious job offers, they would naturally choose the one with the better work culture. As a result, these organizations will be a hot selection among new recruits.

Raises overall productivity

When employees believe in the company’s values and are satisfied with their jobs, they’re more motivated to go the extra mile. It’s important for organizations to build a corporate culture that is beneficial for both the organization and employees.

BONUS BIT: Let’s say you are a new recruit looking for a company that is fun to work for. How do you know which company suits your interests? Here are a few steps on how to identify a company’s culture.

Look through the company’s website

You can get a glimpse of a company’s culture from their vision and missions in their ‘About Us’ page. Certain websites also share testimonials from employees so you can read about the company culture from their perspective.

Do your own research

Did you know that you can sought out reviews on companies online? Certain websites like Glassdoor and JobAdvisor give out reviews and ratings of companies that were written by employees.

Enquire from your connections

You could share your interest on a certain company through your social media profiles or on LinkedIn, and ask for opinions from the people you know. If you have a connection with someone in the said company, try to get him/her to share his/her experience with you.

Enquire during the interview

During job interviews, the moment the panelist asks if you have any questions to ask them, that is the time to ask about the company culture. Remember, the interviewer may ask how you would fit into the company, but you could ask about your daily schedules or workload as well. Asking the right questions will give you an insight to the company culture.
